Our stadt:klang project has been shown within a program about “sound in the city” in a German TV Show called “Bauerfeind” on the channel ZDF.kutlur and 3sat.

Florian (co-founder), Clemens (drummer) an me gave an interview in the MQ of Vienna and played some façades!

FASSADENDIALOG

Finally finished! We had the great opportunity to work together with professional drummers from Vienna!!! Thanks to everyone who helped us to make the video possible!

“Facade Dialogue” demonstrates an imaginary dialogue between two buildings in Vienna, i.e. ‘performed on’ by two percussionists. All sounds are created by hands and drumsticks and recorded with very sensitive binaural microphones.

Use headphones to hear the stereo sound.

SUPERVILLE - we are what we inhabit:

Stadt:klang is an official member of the Spanish architecture-collective called “Superville we are what we inhabit”, which defines itself as a group of people who believe in multiple forms of understanding and using the city in a playful way.

“Superville” is a space where you can share with other people your lived, written, dreamed or imagined cities, in order to rediscover, redraw and re-describe your urban habitat by creating your own cartography of the city.

We are currently working on urban cross-border projects, e.g. Vienna and Barcelona. In this example, we are generating parallels /comparative projects between the two iconic cities in the form of short films / sonic city maps, with the goal of creating a particular urban sound (or tag) for each city.

We hope to bring Stadt:Klang to more cities, particularly with the cooperation of local musicians and artists.

How does the city sounds at 1,1m?

How does the city sounds if you play it along the different façades with a drumstick at 1,1m height? Does it sound different on 0,5m?

We are working on video clips representing imaginary “soundlines” at different heights in the city. The actor/drummer walks with a constant speed through the streets of the city and creates continuous sounds. The idea is to represent the human movement and its interaction with the urban context.

Deutsch:

Wie klingt die Stadt wenn man sie mit einem durchgehenden Rhythmus in 1,1 Metern Höhe entlang der unterschiedlichen Fassaden mit drumsticks bespielt? Klingt sie in 0,5 Metern anders?

In Form eines Kurzclips soll eine imaginäre Klopflinie in 1,1 Metern und 0,5 Metern Höhe entlang der Fassaden/objekte gezogen werden. Der/die Akteur/Akteure bewegt sich mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit durch die Straße und erzeugt durchgehend Klänge. Menschliche Bewegung und gebaute Umwelt werden dargestellt…

First intuitive sound approaches on a building located in Vienna!

Because of its special composition (exterior Insulation) the façade acts like an enormous percusion instrument. You can create many diferent surprising sound if you “play” on it!

Experimentation: MUMOK Wien

The Museum of Modern Art in Vienna inside the Museumsquartier.

We have been experimenting with this building for a long time. Every element of its basalt-stone façade sounds different. Absolutely fascinating. We recorded every stone in a certain area and marked them with different colours according to harmonic and other acoustic criteria. Many people who past by where very interested and played with us on the façade!

The first stadt:klang video clip!

Within a short movie we describe an “urban rhythm” that is generated by different sounds a person “playes” along a path in the city. The steps of this person create the rhythmical base for a sound-experiment.

Das erste “stadt:klang” Video

In Form eines Kurzfilmes beschreiben wir einen „urbanen Rhythmus“ der sich aus unterschiedlichen Klängen entlang eines imaginären Pfades in der Stadt ergibt. Die menschlichen Schritte bilden hierbei die rhythmische Basis für ein Klang-Experiment.
